Squash has moved outdoors in Africa. Last month, the first outdoor squash court on the continent opened at The Point in Mossel Bay, South Africa. Anyone walking along the coast can now stop, watch and pick up a racket.

A court by the ocean

The court stands at The Point, one of Mossel Bay’s most iconic spots, right at the promenade overlooking the ocean. It is an Access Courts outdoor squash court: a steel frame with laminated glass walls and a perforated floor that drains rainwater quickly, so play can resume soon after a shower. The structure is designed to withstand winds up to 12 Beaufort, which matters on an exposed coastline.

Installed by JP Brits

The installation was carried out by JP Brits of JPSquash. JP is captain of SA Country Districts and has been a driving force behind squash in the Garden Route since moving to Mossel Bay, including bringing the Jarvis-Kaplan interprovincial tournament to the region for the first time this year.

Who can play

The court is open to the public. Bookings can be made by the facility Point Mosselbay or via a booking app.

From Chicago to Mossel Bay

The Mossel Bay court follows Chicago’s Union Park, where an Access Courts outdoor court became the first public outdoor squash court in the United States. Both show the same thing: put squash where people can see it, and new players follow. Read the field report from Chicago.
